I talk a lot about detoxification. As you add more cleansing foods into your diet
you will find in the long term that you feel so much better - both physically and emotionally.
However, I do need to address the fact that, quite often, in the short term,
you may experience a healing crisis. So, this is the focus of
this week's newsletter.
The Cleansing Reaction: Toxic Symptoms Natural
Your body didn’t become toxic overnight, and the process of detoxification doesn’t happen immediately, or without some uncomfortable side effects as your body rids itself of the toxins that have been storing there for years.
A healing crisis is when symptoms from diseases and toxins that are released during a detoxification process manifest themselves. A healing crisis occurs when toxins stored in the body (in organs and tissues) are released at a faster rate than can be properly eliminated. The more toxic your body is, the more severe the detoxification and the more intense the reaction.
If you have never eaten highly cleansing foods exclusively for several days (i.e. a variety of raw vegetables and some fruits), it’s natural to experience symptoms such as:
• Extreme fatigue or its opposite, restlessness
• Cramps
• Headache (believed to be caused by build up of toxins in the blood)
• Skin eruptions
• Aches, pains
• Insomnia
• Nausea
• Sinus congestion
• Fever (usually low grade) and/or chills
• Frequent urination and/or urinary tract discharges
• Drop in blood pressure
• Cold or flu-like symptoms
• Strong emotions: anger, despair, sadness, fear, etc.
• Suppressed memories may arise
• Anxiety
• Mood swings
One of the biggest misconceptions people face with the ‘healing crisis’ is the belief that they have caught some infection or that an old condition like acne has returned. In actuality, these symptoms are a sign that your body is finally purging itself of the last remnants of the toxins that created the disease or ailment in the first place.
The best way to get rid of these symptoms is to drink plenty of water, juices, and herbal teas to flush the toxins out of your system. Other ways to ease the process are:
• Get plenty of rest and sleep
• Use an enema or colonic to provide relief
• Meditation
• Acupuncture
• A massage
• Light exercise
• Eat light meals that are easy to digest such as fresh vegetables, and fruit – in moderation
• Exfoliate the skin with a friction glove
Before beginning any new program, such as cleansing, always ensure your health by having a thorough medical check-up. The ‘healing crisis’ symptoms could also be an indication of a medical health problem so when in doubt, consult your medical health practitioner.
Your energy level will soar when you cleanse. Remember that digestion requires huge amounts of energy. Since you are eating only uncooked food (veggies), you are eating the foods that require the least amount of energy to digest, but supply a great deal of energy.
It will take a little time to start feeling better, but if you continue to eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water and work on the emotional, spiritual and mental aspects of your life, your reward will be vibrant health and boundless energy. Knowledge is power, and that power is in your hands!
