With another holiday season upon us, so are the cookies and cakes, the parties, and the reflection that comes from another year passed. This year, don’t wait until New Years to make the decision to be, feel and look your best. Use the holiday season to jumpstart your health goals or if you’ve been healthy for the past 11 months, resist the temptation to let your discipline slide this month.
Here are ten important behaviors you can apply now so that you’re prepared and ready to face the stress and challenges that may come your way this holiday season.
1. Take some time to reflect on what you learned, how you grew, what you accomplished. Begin to think about where you would like to be at the end of 2009.
2. Apply what you learned in exercise 1 and write your goals for New Year's now. Don’t wait until December 30. Something magical happens when you physically write down your goals and dreams. It breathes life into your hopes and paves the way to make them a reality.
3. Speak powerful words: Don Miguel Ruiz mentions in his book, The Four Agreements, "Be impeccable with your words and use the power of your words in the direction of truth and love." Even if you’re surrounded by ungrateful houseguests or overwhelming relatives, use the power of your words with positive intention.
4. Alkalize beforehand. If you don’t have time to find greens for your diet, add Super Food supplements like, Vitamineral Green and other super nutrient-rich products that provide minerals, vitamins and more in a quick and effective form like powders or mixes.
Health food stores are brim with great brands but these are just a few that I’m familiar with and use regularly. Bump up the quantity to 4-6 tablespoons a day before, during and after the holidays to keep your body alkaline which we all know is a code-name for healthy.
5. If you eat too much and your system feels heavy, plan a mini-cleanse. Take a break from food for 24 hrs or more before Christmas and then again between Christmas and New Year's. Drink lots of fluids or vegetable juice and blended food. This will rest the body and help rejuvenate the whole system.
6. Take digestive enzymes to help you with indigestion, heartburn, gas, bloating and constipation. Enzymes also help digest cooked and processed food and may help you keep weight off and feel lighter.
7. Keep your liver healthy all the time. Bodies that are burdened with carrying extra weight also have a sluggish liver. Take a liver support supplement to help deal with the toxicity of the not-so-healthy eats you’ll be consuming at holiday parties. Read article on liver care
8. Exercise daily!! Aim for at least 20 minutes of exercise a day. Take a brisk walk after dinner if the weather isn’t too cold or if the temperatures keep you in, pop in a fun workout video. These are just a few samples of how to squeeze in daily exercise during this busy time of year. Plus, exercise is a powerful stress-reliever and who couldn’t benefit from that over the holidays?
9. Aim for regularity. With so many processed and heavy foods available this time of year, it’s easy for our digestive systems to get a bit backed up. Avoid this by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, drinking water, and exercising daily. These simple healthy behaviors will make for a healthy gut.
10. Eat mindfully. At holiday parties this year, focus on foods that you can have rather than foods you can’t have. As you mull over feasting on a plate of fresh fruit or a piece of dense and ultra-sweet pecan pie, think about how you will feel after you eat a particular food. Let this mindfulness dictate your food choices.
