What are bad foods? Basically, they're defined as high fat, high cholesterol, and high sugar foods that have little or no value for basic daily nutrition. While many of us realize that greasy hamburgers, French fries, fried chicken, ice cream and cake are not particularly good for us, many of us don't realize how detrimental they are to our bodies and bodily functions.
However, bad foods go beyond the typical fast food restaurant fare that in many of us seem to enjoy. Bad foods also include items that many of us thought were relatively healthy. For example, many of us have switched from white flour to wheat flour, or from white flour tortillas to wheat tortillas in an effort to cut down on carbs. However, did you know that refined wheat flour isn't that good for us either? Actually, wheat flour tends to convert sugar rather quickly and is stored as fat if it's not used within 24 hours.
The last time you strolled through your grocery market produce department, did you check out the new hybrid fruits? Hybrid fruits are those that have been genetically engineered without seeds, such as watermelons and grapes. While many of us don't like to be constantly spitting out watermelon seeds, be advised that hybrid fruits contain more sugar than natural fruits and don't contain as much nutritional value as the real thing.
Most of us are also familiar with the effects of caffeine, and we're accustomed to those throbbing headaches if we don't get our daily dose. However, did you know that caffeine may give us a jolt to start out day, but that it also raises blood pressure and heart rate and may increase our craving for sweets and foods?
Now let's take a look at what you eat for breakfast. Grab your favorite cereal and look to see how much sugar or fat is contained in a single serving size. Do the same thing with your hot cereals, your sausage, bacon, eggs and biscuits. The simple carbohydrates and sugars found in most cereals and breakfast foods are not at all healthy.
Corn and corn syrup is hard for the body to break down and increases triglyceride levels, causing our body to become acidic, which throws chemical interactions out of whack and causes constipation. Breakfast these days for most people involves high carbohydrates, low fiber and low water content, providing inadequate nutrition for our bodies.
If that's not enough to convince you, take a look at this: increased risk of heart disease has been directly linked to diets high in refined carbohydrates. Individuals who consume high sugar and high starch processed foods are typically overweight and have increased risks of requiring diabetes or heart attack.
Unfortunately, the list of bad foods doesn't stop there. Many of the foods we eat cause food sensitivities and allergies, including wheat, soy, and milk. Many types of meat, including chicken, contain traces of pesticides, chemicals, as well as parasites that can damage your immune system and wreak havoc with your digestion.
It's long been understood that meat products such as chicken and turkey are healthier than more fatty portions of meat including beef, lamb and pork. However, chicken, turkey and ocean fish may also contain chemicals, toxic hormones, and an excess of complex proteins that are difficult for the party to digest and break down into useful components.
Now, you're probably wondering what the heck you can eat. Not to worry - there are plenty of good, healthy foods for you eat, but it's going to be a matter of changing eating habits and expectations. Switch to products that are low in carbs, high in fiber, and contain high water contents. Instead of cow or soymilk, try sesame or almond milk. These are fantastic sources of protein and calcium, and they taste good too. For cereals, switch to buckwheat, quinoa, or millet grains. If you're craving animal protein, try cold water fish, such as sardines, salmon, and mackerel, which are rich in essential fatty acids and omega-3 oils.
Remember that bad foods, especially fried foods, decrease the availability of oxygen in our cellular structure and can create environments that enhance cancer cell development. Refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, table salts, and caffeine leech vital minerals and vitamins from our muscles, bones, and organs.
Your body is worth the effort, so take charge of your environment and start feeding your body the way it was meant to be fed.
